Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, these bands seem to be a dime a dozen these days ... This is ****ANOTHER**** band that writes songs that sound like they're tripping on ecstasy.

Don't make a mistake about it, Team Sleep is talented. It seems that most dream-pop bands these days are talented! But these guys in particular don't seem to know how to exercise much discretion here! A lot of these songs are good and entertaining and stuff ... there's just way too many of them. There are 15 tracks in here and most of them are about four minutes long! YIKES!!!!!!!!

Nevertheless, we've all listened to albums that are longer than this, and I haven't been bored through 'em. ... Pink Floyd's The Wall ... Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road ... The Who's Quadrophenia ... Yeah! Those albums are freaking long, but they're all WONDERFUL albums!

That leads me to perhaps the greatest flaw of this album. THERE'S SCANT LITTLE DIVERSITY IN THIS!!!! Every song sounds a little bit like the other without having much that's intensely interesting about it. Sure, I scored some songs in here high points for sounding nice ... but there are other songs in the album that don't sound quite as nice and ... so, why should I care about it? The lack of diversity makes this a difficult one to sit through. They're also not very good melody-writers, but ... most dream-pop artists seem to suffer the same problem, yet they come out with better albums.

Team Sleep is a pretty good album, but it doesn't have anything in particular that makes it stand out above the rest.

Overall Album Score: 7.5 out of 10 (This is another talented band starting up doing dreary 00s dream-pop that sounds like a trip on ecstasy ... The lack of diversity and the fact that this album is nearly an hour long is what does them in.)

Average Song Score: 8.0 (A good collection of songs, overall. There's too many of them and they all sound alike, but they're overall quite good.)

Album Tilt: 7.0 (I'm being verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry harsh here, but it would have been greatly to their benefit to cut this album by a third and providing more diversity to the album. This is very difficult to sit through, even though the music itself is pretty good.)

Artist Rating: 7.5 (As far as song-making goes, they seem to know what they're doing. ... But this isn't a great artistic achievement or anything.)

Track Reviews

Ataraxia 9/10

This is one drugged up, freaky mess! .... And I like it! The track starts up with a goofy tape of some ... Indian movie, I guess, with some scratchy noises over that. And then the song starts up. It's your typical dreary 00s pop song, and this is among the best of 'em, I suppose. The melody isn't catchy, but the atmosphere sure makes me feel drugged. Nice one!

Ever (Foreign Flag) 8/10

This one's even more dreary (and more boring, too, I guess) than that last one! It still sounds totally freaky and drugged up. ... Unfortunately, they couldn't make this too interesting. Otherwise, the song was nicely done.

Your Skull is Red 8/10

This one makes me feel like I overdosed on some type of freaky drug ... again ... but this time, it doesn't feel like the experience was worth it! The song is a loud one with conflicting noises going off all over the place, and there's not much of a melody that holds it together! ... You can't be druggy for druggy's sake, you know! That said, the instrumental bit at the end of this song is strangely alluring and effective.

Princeton Review 9/10

This one has more structure than the previous two songs, which makes it more accessible, and this is a perfectly fine song! ... It starts out as a very low-key drugged-up pop song and then it gets more dramatic and weird. ... If it wasn't so long (five minutes), I might have felt inclined to give it a higher rating.

Blvd. Nights 8.5/10

Another pretty good drugged up song with structure ... It's loud and ... um ... It's a better version of the beginning part of "Your Skull is Red." I guess a problem I'm already identifying with this band at this point in the album is that they're not very diverse! They're a very good band at this drugged-up stuff, but ... is that all they do? How about something to spice things up with?

Delorian 9/10

It's only a minute-and-a-half long instrumental that sounds calm and collected. This is a good song for diversity's sake, I'd say ... but it's not enough.

Our Ride to Recovery 10/10

Okay ... Finally, Team Sleep show me a really good reason to listen to all this drug-pop! The melody, for once, is wonderful ... and the band's already gifted abilities at studio arrangements and production are left to do nothing but shine. This is a dreary, slow song, but it leaves a mark ... Sweet!!!

Tomb of Liegia 7.5/10

They're going a little too far here!! Like "Our Ride to Recovery," this is another very slow drug song ... but this is freaking difficult to even sit through! This song has a lot of structure, too, and ... it doesn't totally work. I guess it would have been nice if it didn't have to repeat so much! ... It's still nicely done, however.

Elizabeth 8.5/10

I swear, this song sounds nearly exactly like some piano song I used to listen to a long time ago ... but whatever. This song is more messed-up and druggy than the previous three songs or so ... and it's pretty good in that messed-up sort of way. A lot of noises going off all the time ... the melody's pretty good ... and ... yeah.

Staring At the Queen 6.5/10

It's not polite to stare ... at the queen ... Or at Queen. Unless you're at a Queen concert. Because ... well, it'd be weird if you weren't staring ... There sure are a lot of noises in this song. It starts out with a bunch of annoying beeps ... and then a trash can lid drum starts playing ... And then all the noise stops and some quiet instrumentals start up. ... An interesting-type song, I guess, but I don't exactly like it.

Ever Since WWI 7.5/10

This is a mid-tempoed drugged up song that sounds ... like everything else on the album without adding anything interesting. Indeed, it's a decent song to listen to, and it's not utterly boring, but still. Ho hum.

King Diamond 7/10

This one has some Beastie Boys-esque rapping on it! ... Well, the song's not great, though. It repeats way too much and ... the instrumentation is too dreary for its own good. Bloody hell.

Live From the Stage 6.5/10

Oh, wow! Talk about being too dreary for its own good! The beginning of this song is nothing but drear. Eeek!!! This is an instrumental (with an eerie voice in the background). It would almost seem that it would have fared more nicely in a movie soundtrack! I kind of like the beginning, however. It gets noisy in the middle of the song, and ... it's just noise. Not really anything there for me to enjoy, I'm afraid. Hmhm.

Aye!!!!! Why do you guys freaking have it in for me??!?? This is another DREARY song that's .... Ugggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhh ... difficult to sit through.

...Nice try! (They undoubtedly thought that by titling their song 11/11, I'd forget that was the song title and think that's what I scored it! ... Well, it's not working!!) ... This song, nevertheless, is more of a regular old structured song. It's totally drugged up and stuff ... but it's not really that enjoyable. It could have used a catchier melody ... or somethin' ... It's pretty good, though. I quite like it overall. Um. Yeah.
